What are the best flatbed scanners? Preferably one that has a large scanning surface(bigger than 8 1/2x 11). If anyone has an opinion I would love to hear it. As far as paying for what you get, what is the minimum I should spend?

Hi there man! Welcome to the Inkwell Boards :-)
I can't recommend highly enough the Brother 6490cw large format scanner/printer combo. I picked my up for £200 here in the UK new and has a great A3 scanner bed and will take strathmore 400 2 ply plate boards through the feed for printing bluelines. On top of that, it has individual CMYK cartridges that are cheap to replace, and when used for high res, full bleed prints delivers excellent results.
Although a bit more expensive than the entry level Mustek A3 scanner, for the addition of a large format inkjet printer into the mix it really is a winner. Plus it's Wifi enabled so I can print to it from anywhere in the house - win!
