 Hello from Ben Jones
« Thread Started on Oct 1, 2009, 10:27pm »

Hi guys Im new to the inking scene and I was led here by someone from deviantart as I am really attempting to get good at this. I always wanted to be a comic penciler and never really respected what inkers do, well now I do, to the point I don't have that much interest in penciling anymore. Well as I said im really new to this so bare with the crap i place up here lol. Oh and don't pull punches I take this pretty serious.

First inking attempt with brush and micron.

This is the second attempt at inking something and it was my own pencils so the inking went very expiremental just trying to learn what textures and line types do what ect. It was fun and learned a lot overall.

This is my next inking job and I feel I made some progress here though it might not show. I understand how the brush works much better. I also noticed I goofed the line weights in areas and made an overall mess in others. Just cant get the white stuff to work well with my brush. Was tough but amazingly fun to attempt.

going to take a stab at this one next its been rough so far with the really tiny details and none of these ive had a high res to work from so a lot of it gets muddy with the copied bluelines. Not making excuse by any means just stating it sucks lol

Hey Ben! Glad you found us ok from DevArt :-)

I hate working off lo-res scans too, it makes the job much harder. The only advice I can offer is to either work with a grayscale copy to had as reference which is usually easier to read than 20-30% cyan, or to use an image upscaling plugin to Photoshop before getting the boards printed like Alienskin. It's available as a free demo, and basically uses a vector based enlargement algorithm so it can often work wonders on enhancing details. Not always a cert, but worth a try!

Other than that, I kinda set myself a threshold a while back of image sizes I wouldn't work below - for example I won't try to print an image less than 1000px wide onto an 11"x17". It's always great to get a nice hires scan to work from :-)

HI Ben,
I like what you are trying to do. I'd suggest reading thru the crits of other peoples work on this site, to get some quick up to speed stuff under your belt. Theres a definite style developing in your work, and from what I see inked your pencils arent too bad. The main thing I'd focus on is getting a handle on this one concept. make sure the exterioir weights are heavier than the interior. keep that in mind & your work specifically will greatly improve.
Jay
also if you check my website in the samples to download section theres high res files you can use to work on samples.
