 Ross Hughes Colors
« Thread Started on Apr 19, 2010, 12:56pm »

I claim this section of the forum in the name of the United States of Hughes!!!! *plants flag*

There's something to be said for being first, right?

I've been a part-time freelance digital colorist for about 4 years now, having just completed the seven issue mini-series called Fallen Justice from Red Handed Studios. I'm currently working on a project called Nature God that will be coming out from Terminal Press, and I've been helping out with some covers for Beta3 Comics, Sniper and Rook.

I've recently decided to open up my skill set and begin to learn the art of inking. So, in the near future, I hope to be able to share with you all the fruits of that labor for you to rip to shreds and tell me how to become better. In the meantime though, I thought I would share some of my coloring work with you and ask for any feedback that you care to provide.

Don't worry about being gentle. I've got thick skin and a razor sharp wit, so I can take whatever you feel is necessary to give. >)

Ironic that the first piece in my "Colors" thread is a somewhat monotone piece. But I thought it would keep you on your toes. :) This is a Sweeney Todd piece that I had commissioned for my wife. Every year I like to get someone to do something original for her and then I'll color a version for her to put up next to the original artwork. This piece was drawn by Harold Edge (my Fallen Justice running buddy)

The next set is a few pages that I did for a submission to Dark Horse. The book is called Partners In Crimefighting. Pencils are by Yvel Guichet and the inks are Joe Rubinstein.

This Hellboy pic done by Jerry Rascoe was one that I picked up from him at a convention here in Houston several months ago. I ended up buying the original artwork from him and scanned it in to do my own colors. I surprised him a copy at Comicpalooza last month and told him if he wanted to use them for prints to have at it, so there may be some more of this one floating around in the near future.

These are a couple of the Sniper and Rook covers that I did for Beta 3. Both are pencilled by Michael Kasinger. The first is inked by Stephen Baskerville and the second is inked by Mike Babinski.

And this is one that I just finished up. This is going to be a pin-up in an upcoming issue of The Perhapanauts. Pencils and inks were done by Eric Henson.

Well, that's it for now. I'll come back in a little later and post some older work. Comments and critiques are more than welcome. Hope to talk to you all very soon.

I think I've almost got my "Sorry I haven't been around much lately..." speech perfected by now. I've been keeping my head down while working on a project for the last few months called Nature God. I wrapped it up a couple of days ago, so now I'm trying to get caught up on commissions before I start working on some stuff of my own and getting my portfolio tightened up.

Before I get started on commission work, I had promised that this would be the next thing I did that wasn't Nature God related. Look for more coming from me VERY soon!!!

Free time....who knew? I'm really trying to create some strong portfolio pieces in the coming days. In the mean time, here's a piece that I'm going to have made in to a print in the near future. Me want feedback!!!

I started on this one a couple months ago and had to put it aside. I've been wanting to finish it up for a while now. I've probably still got to make some adjustments to it, but I want to take a break from it and come back to it. In the mean time I figured I'd post it and see what everyone else thought about it.

Sure it looks like Supes has the upper-hand here, but we ALL know how this one is going to turn out, don't we?

This was a fun one to color. I'm not sure I'm entirely happy with the light at the top, but I'm going to take a step back from it and see what others may think before deciding if I need to rework it.

C&C's heartily encouraged!

the brightness on venoms forward hand doesnt make a ton of sense to me. I'd either push it farther to the black or do a gradient color hold on the black to match the colors brightness.
